THUNDER Series - Overview

Thunder Series

THUNDER Series probe from Byte Paradigm is a new kind of instrument that uses FPGA multi-gigabit transceivers for functional testing. THUNDER Series implements a single or bi-directional channel link with the internal nodes of the FPGA and is able to buffer, send and receive digital information such as debug trace, stimulation data patterns and communication frames.

THUNDER Series probe is the first Byte Paradigm's product that inserts and collect data from inside the system under test, while its main data storage is located outside the system under test, that is in the probe itself.

THUNDER Series probe's principle is based on the close interaction between the software running on the host PC and blocks of IP implemented in the FPGA.

These blocks of IP :

  • handle the transceiver communication at the target FPGA level and the serialization/deserialization of the data;
  • implement the connection with the internal nodes of the FPGA.
Thunder - principle overview

Benefits
  • THUNDER probe helps overcome limited FPGA resources availability: it stores pattern and/or tracing information outside the FPGA and transmits them on a high-speed serial link;
  • THUNDER probe makes the most of the unused FPGA transceivers, while saving on the FPGA functional I/Os;
  • THUNDER probe provides a high-throughput channel to 'inject' data patterns into the FPGA;
  • THUNDER probe multi-gigabit channel allows the collection of extended tracing information - larger than what the FPGA resources usually allow.
  • As a Ethernet Gbit / USB 3.0 solution, THUNDER Series probe is conveniently controlled directly from PC.
Applications
  • Digital Pattern Generation at FPGA internal speed for IP testing, which require large / high throughput data sets
  • Tracing / logging of internal nodes for FPGA debug.
Availability

Thunder Series probe is currently in our beta program. Unit samples and software / firmware environment will be progressively released by the end of 2012.
